Health Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure PDF Print E-mail

Low concentration exposures (under 10 PPM) Hydrogen Sulfide is noticeable by its offensive odor (similar to rotten eggs) even in low concentrations. The sense of smell cannot be relied upon to warn a worker of a dangerous concentration of the gas, because the gas rapidly paralyzes the olfactory nerves causing a loss of the sense of smell. A longer exposure to a low concentration of the gas may result in the loss of the sense of smell as well.

Higher concentration exposures (10 PPM and above)
Low concentrations that are prolonged or a short term exposure to higher concentrations may lead to death. It is a well known fact that the sense of smell will be rendered ineffective by hydrogen sulfide and that can result in an individual failing to recognize the presence of dangerously high concentrations. Exposure to hydrogen sulfide causes death by asphyxiation.

Hydrogen Sulfide is an Extremely Toxic PDF Print E-mail

Hydrogen sulfide is an extremely toxic, flammable gas that may be encountered in gas production operations, high-sulfide high sulfur content crude oil processing, drilling operations, associated gas disposal and steam and water operations.

Any exposure should be avoided however if an exposure occurs personnel need to understand the importance of knowing what to do before an accident. Gas detection and breathing apparatus must be available and personnel need to be trained in the proper use of the equipment.

The listed IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) level is extremely low (300 PPM).

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) PDF Print E-mail

Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is an invisible but highly toxic gas. It is a product formed by the decomposition of organic matter in the presence of bacteria. Also called sour gas or stink gas, H2S is generally recognized by its rotten egg odor.

The human nose can normally detect the smell even at a low concentration level, however at higher levels, it quickly paralyzes the olfactory nerves and the nose’s ability to smell is deadened. At a concentration level of 1000 ppm and above, the effect of H2S can be immediately lethal.
